By the late 18th century, he had asserted control over the Kohala and Kona regions of the Big Island’s northwestern side, but he still faced opponents. After one battle against his cousin, Kamehameha consulted a local kahuna (priest) for advice on how to proceed. The kahuna told him he would be favored by the gods if he built a sacrificial temple.

Puukohola Heiau (the “Temple on the Hill of the Whale”) arose out of that conversation. Now preserved at the Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site, the temple took less than a year to build but it was a feat of human engineering that required thousands of laborers. The red stones used to construct Puukohola Heiau were quarried about 14 miles away and transported to the temple site by a “human chain.” Even more impressive, the massive temple was built completely by hand. No mortar was used to join any of the stones.

When the temple was completed, Kamehameha invited his cousin there to discuss the terms of a possible peace treaty. When the cousin arrived (an extremely poor decision, as it turned out), he and his entire traveling party were massacred. Kamehameha had overcome one of the hurdles blocking his path toward Hawaiian unification. The bodies were offered to the temple as part of its dedication.

Eventually Kamehameha succeeded in his goal. The ruins of his bloody temple (and signs of the often-bloody native Hawaiian culture) can be seen today at the Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site.
